Until then I’d always thought of myself as a painter. Landscapes, portraits, plants, whatever, kind of traditional, middle of the road stuff.
See what I mean?
Then this came into my head.
Mother Phergle |
Quite a change. Where it came from I don’t really know, but surprisingly, for the first time in years, I’d created something which I felt was completely original, and which apparently originated in some squirmy unvisited part of myself. The idea simply dribbled out of my head and into reality.
Maybe I really had been a victim of alien experiments, but I didn’t care. I liked it.
Having made the figure, (combining polystyrene, wood, cardboard, cellulose filler, and acrylic paint to name just a few of the materials I can remember) the next step was to colour the thing. I’ve always rather admired the work of Brett Murray and Conrad Botes, so my initial idea was to use nice, bright comic-book colours.
This was my first colour version, although ultimately it wouldn’t stay that way.
