The Shepherd's Tree
Oil on canvas
50 x 40 cm
SOLD

The Shepherd’s Tree (or Boscia albitrunca) is a common sight in the semi-arid Karoo region of South Africa were I live. I’ve painted quite a few of these, as their gnarled, white trunks are always interesting to render.

The Old Post Office, Kendrew
Oil on canvas
50 x 40 cm
SOLD

Kendrew is a hamlet about 50 km from my hometown of Graaff-Reinet, although it seems longer on a sand road, especially when the temperature is 48° C, as it was the day I took the photograph for this work Partly because of the demise of most of the railways in South Africa, dying settlements like Kendrew are unfortunately common. This building was once housed the post office, but has now fallen into dilapidation. Sad.

Nieu-Bethesda from Arthur's Seat
Oil on canvas
102 x 76 cm
SOLD

A more famous village near me is Nieu-Bethesda, and it is quite the opposite of Kendrew, despite being almost the same distance away. Situated in the heart of the Sneeuberg ( Snowy Mountains) it can get extremely cold and usually has plenty of water. The painting shows a view taken from one of the roads leading into the valley, with the 2065 m Kompasberg towering in the background.

Aloe on Monumentkop
Oil on canvas
75 x 95 cm
SOLD

You can’t tell from the painting, but on the day I captured this moment on a hill above town, it had actually been snowing. We were bundled up in sweaters, scarves, and thick jackets. Aloes flower in the colder months, and behind me, opposite the aloe, the mountains were topped with white.

Aloe in the Square
Oil on canvas
75 x 95 cm
SOLD

Near my house is a public area planted with many species of aloe, which flower at different times. Late one afternoon I saw masses of blooms and took many photographs as reference. I chose this specific one because of the hot oranges, the purple of the shadows and the almost-black of the background trees.
